Our Circular Route at Cathedral Peak

It really is amazing how much work you can get done when at a conference you don’t quite have an interest in.

From Drakensberg – The Cathedral Day 6

Our previous day gave us enough courage to attempt a 6h circular route at Cathedral Peak on our Drakensberg Trip. We started the day with breakfast and then left, armed with only water and our shoes. We did the recommended route in reverse and notified the reception of our route. The route took us to Mushroom Rock, which has a fair ascent, to what looks like rolling hills across the escarpment. There is a fair descent to Rainbow Falls, past a cave, where further down you can stop over at Doreen Falls. By this time though we only wanted to get back and so we skipped Doreen Falls. Apparently there are some pools in which you can swim there. The original idea was that we were going to be so pooped and hot by the time we got there (end of the route) that we would want to swim. We were a bit more fit than we gave ourselves credit for, we motored on the way back past Doreen Falls, not hot or bothered (okay bothered maybe, there were these pesky little bugs everywhere).

As we were entering the hotel, it started to rain and thunderstorm. In hindsight, the weather on the trip really did favour us on more than one occasion. We went for lunch and by the time we were done with lunch it had stopped raining. Most people were indoors because of the rain and we had the swimming pools to ourselves after lunch. Our feet by now were very sore and we decided to skip anymore hiking for our last day at Cathedral Peak and to try to enjoy more of the other things that were on offer.
